CN Charlottetown – 1974 Sidings List

This is copied from the 1974 sidings list I mentioned earlier. “SPINS Number” is the code being assigned in the new numbering program. These is the complete list of sidings covered under Charlottetown (Zone C) as listed in the letter/file. As before, sidings terminating with the suffix “TT” are public sidings (“Team Tracks”). I have several different detailed track plans for the Charlottetown trackage and as I get them added to this blog I will coordinate them with this list. As well, I’ll try and annotate the pictures I have of freight cars in Charlottetown using the entries from this list.

It’s easy to see how a layout based on Charlottetown could entertain a yard operator for quite a while with this many different sidings to switch. As is reflected above and in other’s recollections about the railway the Island was unique in that most cars were only carrying loads in one direction and there was very little need to store cars locally for any period of time. This is reflected in the tiny size of the yard, for instance, of all the sidings identified within Charlottetown (78 locations), these are the only sidings that are tagged with a “yard” reference:

Present Switch Zone & Track Number Designation SPINS Number
C 08 Yard Storage Track C 008
C 10 Yard Storage Track C 010
C 24 Yard Storage Track C 024
C 34 Yard Track #6 C 034
C 35 Yard Track #5 C 035
C 36 Yard Track #4 C 036
C 37 Yard Track #3 C 037
C 41 Yard Track #2 C 041
C 42 Yard Track #1 C 042
C 50 Yard Storage Track C 050

Reflecting back on the model railways I’ve built over the years and the model railways my friends have built, it’s remarkable how close many of us were in building layouts that were actually quite close to this prototype. Neat eh?
