Swinyard on the track

From Swinyard’s report on the PEI railway some information on the track:
“The Rails arc all of a “T” pattern Sandberg’s standard, 40 lbs to the lineal yard. They are laid on cross-ties or sleepers seven feet long, five inches think and eight to ten inches face and number about 2300 to the mile.”

Using the rail sizes table on the Slimrails website, the closest rail sizes for 1/48 would be to use code 70 rail. For 1/87 it looks like code 40 would work. I’ve always cut ties from balsa sheet and would use a 1/8″ thick tie (pretty darn close in 1/48) and cut them 5/32 to 3/16″ wide and about 1-3/4″ long. 1/87 ties would be cut from 1/16″ sheet and 3/32 to 1/8 wide and just under an inch long. Just off the top of my head you’d use about seven ties per three feet of track which spaces them about 2′ apart (geez that seems far apart, I’ll have to re-check that calc.)
