Tape and chalk. What does it mean?

DSC00503
At several points along the spur a strip of this tape was stretched between the rails. Where it attached to the rails, a chalk notation was inscribed. I’ve never seen this detail before and don’t really know what it is used for.

Any ideas?

    1. Geez, that makes sense. I was scrambling and didn’t take the extra few seconds to look at the chalk notes but your observation does indeed make perfect sense.

I’ve built a lot of model track over the years and certainly laid my share where the rails were not in gauge. It might not be practical to attempt this in model form, in the smaller scales, but it sure is a neat detail to keep in mind.
